You know, when a non-photo-geek says 'Professional <anything>' they mean someone that is going to behave in a manner appropriate for the work, that knows what do to and that they can trust. That trust might come from the fact that the professional does it for a living but that might not be important to everyone.

All this stuff about how much of your wage comes from photography is a bit of confusion that us photo-geeks worry over ... in my uninformed opinion anyway

"What you tell the tax man" definition has to be the clear winner to define "professional".

Can we have "dilettante" as an option on this form, please.

There are plenty of people making money out of photography who are anything BUT professional in their manner. Similarly, there are many hobbyists who take a very serious and refined approach to their craft.

The definition stands. It would follow that if you make money out of photography, you have the necessary skills to do so. Sadly, it's not always the case.

Aha! According to the terms and conditions of the Icon Photo 09 comp...
Quote:
A professional photographer is someone who is a member of a recognised professional body, such as the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP), or who earns in excess of 50% of their annual income from the practice of photography.

I'm only one membership and 50% of my annual income away from being a pro then.

to be a full member of the AIPP - you have to earn the majority of your income from photography, and have done so for over two years.
