Nice colour, looks like just a snapshot, not quite in focus and the crop seems to cut some of it off.

Yeah that's exactly what it was, a snapshot :) But I thought it turned out pretty well all things considered. The Nikkor 35-70 doesn't focus very close which is probably why it's a little soft, but I still love the lens for it's dynamic range and colour.

Might try the shot again with a 50mm f1.8 and compare it.

I'm a Canon man, but isn't dynamic range a function of the sensor/body rather than the lens?

I agree with the comments posted so far, and I think your idea of shooting with a 50mm is a good call.
